Empuraan sparks debate over portrayal of Hindutva

The Malayalam film 'Empuran', starring acclaimed actor Mohanlal, has ignited a political controversy, with certain saffron elements alleging that the movie depicts Hindutva in a negative light while seemingly defending the banned Popular Front of India and external intelligence agencies such as Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence .
The film, directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, serves as a sequel to the 2019 hit 'Lucifer' and continues the narrative of its protagonist, Khureshi-Ab'raam, portrayed by Mohanlal. Upon its release, 'Empuran' received widespread acclaim for its gripping storyline and stellar performances. However, certain BJP members have raised objections, claiming that the film's narrative undermines the principles of Hindutva and portrays organisations like the PFI and ISI in a sympathetic manner.
Critics argue that 'Empuran' misrepresents the ideological tenets of Hindutva, portraying them as oppressive and intolerant. They contend that such depictions could mislead audiences and foster misconceptions about the movement's core values. Additionally, concerns have been raised about the film's portrayal of the PFI, an organisation banned in India for alleged extremist activities. Detractors claim that 'Empuran' presents the PFI in a nuanced light, potentially downplaying its controversial history and activities.
The film's narrative includes references to external intelligence agencies, notably Pakistan's ISI. Some BJP members allege that these portrayals are overly sympathetic, potentially undermining national security concerns and the gravity associated with the ISI's alleged activities in India.
Amidst the controversy, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the newly appointed state president of the BJP, extended his best wishes for the film's success. His gesture has been interpreted by some as an attempt to distance the party's official stance from the criticisms levied by certain members, highlighting the internal divisions within the party regarding cultural representations in media.
A party leader went to the extent of clarifying that the BJP has not launched any campaign against the film as its stated policy is that it is for the spectators to form an opinion about the film.
