Kerala CM Warns Against Misrepresenting Sree Narayana Guru's Legacy

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has cautioned against organized attempts to misrepresent the teachings of revered social reformer Sree Narayana Guru, asserting that the Guru was neither a spokesperson nor a practitioner of Sanatana Dharma. Speaking at the Sivagiri pilgrimage meeting in Thiruvananthapuram, Vijayan emphasized that Sree Narayana Guru was a sage who dismantled the rigid frameworks of traditional dharma and proclaimed a new, humanitarian dharma suited for modern times.

Vijayan highlighted that Sanatana Dharma is synonymous with Varnashrama Dharma, which upholds the caste-based Chaturvarna system. He noted that this system glorifies hereditary professions, a notion that Sree Narayana Guru actively challenged by advocating for the defiance of such predetermined roles. The Chief Minister pointed out that the Guru's ascetic life was a continuous defiance of the Chaturvarna system, and his proclamation of "One Caste, One Religion, One God for humankind" directly opposed the exclusivity inherent in Sanatana Dharma.

The Chief Minister's remarks have sparked controversy, drawing criticism from political opponents. Union Minister V. Muraleedharan accused Vijayan of insulting the followers of Sanatana Dharma and challenged him to speak similarly about other religious texts.

Sree Narayana Guru, born in 1856, was a prominent social reformer and spiritual leader in Kerala. He is renowned for his efforts to eradicate the caste system and promote social equality. The Guru's teachings emphasized the unity of humanity, encapsulated in his famous dictum, "One Caste, One Religion, One God for mankind."
