Fraud in Saree Pricing Alleged

Organizers of the Kochi dance programme reportedly procured 12,500 sarees at ₹360 each but charged participants ₹1,600 per saree, leading to accusations of profiteering and lack of transparency.

The event, which attracted thousands of dance enthusiasts, mandated the purchase of specific sarees as part of the performance attire. Participants were informed that the cost per saree was ₹1,600, a price justified by organizers as necessary to cover procurement and administrative expenses.

However, investigations revealed that the sarees were sourced from local manufacturers at a unit price of ₹360, indicating a markup of over 300%. This discrepancy has raised questions about the ethical practices of the event organizers and their commitment to fair treatment of participants.

One participant, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed frustration: "We trusted the organizers to provide quality materials at a fair price. Discovering this significant markup feels like a betrayal, especially when many of us are students or amateur dancers with limited budgets."

In response to the growing outcry, the organizing committee issued a statement asserting that the additional charges were necessary to cover various logistical costs, including storage, distribution, and customization of the sarees to meet the event's specific requirements. They emphasized that no profit was made from the saree sales and that all funds were allocated towards ensuring a successful event.

The incident has sparked a broader discussion about the commercialization of cultural events and the potential exploitation of participants. Many are calling for the establishment of regulatory guidelines to ensure fair pricing and transparency in the organization of such programs.

Local authorities have taken note of the situation, with the Kerala State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission reportedly initiating a preliminary inquiry into the matter. If found guilty of unethical practices, the organizers could face penalties and be required to compensate participants for the overcharged amounts.

This controversy has also led to increased scrutiny of other cultural events in the region, with participants urging organizers to adopt more transparent practices. The Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi, a prominent institution dedicated to the promotion of dance and music, has stated that it will review its guidelines for affiliated events to prevent similar issues in the future.

In the wake of the allegations, several participants have formed a collective to demand accountability and seek refunds for the overcharged amounts. The group is also advocating for greater participant involvement in decision-making processes related to event logistics and expenses.
