Non-Bailable Charges Filed Against Dance Programme Organizers

Authorities have escalated their response to the Kaloor Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium incident, filing non-bailable charges against key organizers. The charges pertain to actions deemed capable of causing death. Those arrested include Benny from Mulanturuthy, responsible for stage construction; Shamir Abdul Rahim, CEO of Mridanga Vision; and Krishna Kumar, manager of Oscar Events.

The incident occurred during a dance program at the stadium, where a stage collapse resulted in injuries to several attendees, including MLA Uma Thomas. A joint investigation by the police, fire force, and public works departments revealed significant safety lapses. The stage was constructed without adequate safety measures, and the additional structures lacked necessary support. Furthermore, the absence of an ambulance near the VIP stage delayed emergency medical assistance. Untrained personnel handled the evacuation of the injured, exacerbating the situation.

The organizers initially faced bailable charges, leading to public criticism. In response, authorities have now imposed more severe, non-bailable sections, reflecting the gravity of the negligence involved. The event, led by Mridanga Vision, aimed to feature 12,000 Bharatanatyam dancers, with promises of Guinness certificates to participants. Allegations have surfaced that the organizers collected substantial fees from participants, ranging from ₹2,000 to ₹6,000, totaling approximately ₹30 million. Parents and participants have expressed concerns over the lack of direct communication from organizers and the involvement of dance schools as intermediaries.
