Uma Thomas Remains on Ventilator

Thrikkakara MLA Uma Thomas continues to receive ventilator support after sustaining severe injuries from a 15-foot fall at Kochi's Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium. The incident occurred during the 'Mridanga Naadam' event, which aimed to set a Guinness World Record with approximately 12,000 Bharatanatyam dancers, including actor-dancer Divya Unni.

Medical reports indicate that Thomas, 59, suffered significant head and spinal injuries, along with fractures to her nasal bone, skull, and ribs. These injuries led to internal bleeding in her lungs, necessitating continued ventilator support. Dr. Krishnanunni Polakulath, Medical Director of Renai Medicity Hospital, stated, "Her overall health condition remains status quo, including the brain injury and the internal bleeding. Her condition has not worsened, which is a good sign. However, our challenge is now aspiration-induced lung injury, which requires her to remain in the ventilator for a few more days."

The fall reportedly occurred due to inadequate safety measures in the VIP gallery, where limited space and insufficient barricading were noted. In response, Kochi City Police have registered a case against the event's organizers and a Kochi-based event management firm for alleged safety lapses. City Police Commissioner Putta Vimaladitya inspected the accident site, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation.

An expert medical team from Kottayam Medical College, led by Dr. Jayakumar, has joined the specialists at Renai Medicity to oversee Thomas's treatment. Their immediate focus is on managing the lung injury and preventing further complications. Uma Thomas, a member of the Indian National Congress, has represented the Thrikkakara constituency since 2022, succeeding her late husband, P. T. Thomas. She is currently the sole woman member from the INC in the Kerala Legislative Assembly.

The 'Mridanga Naadam' event, which aimed to set a world record, has come under scrutiny following the incident. The police have filed an FIR against the organizers, and a detailed investigation is underway to determine accountability.
