Bomb threat at Vet varsity linked to Afzal Guru execution

Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University in Pookode, Wayanad, was placed on high alert after receiving a bomb threat via email on Friday. The message, sent to Vice Chancellor Dr. Anil K.S. and the registrar from an ID named 'Nivedya', claimed the attack was in retaliation for the execution of Afzal Guru, who was convicted in the 2001 Parliament attack.
Upon receiving the threat, university officials promptly informed local law enforcement. Police teams, including bomb disposal squads, were dispatched to the campus to conduct thorough searches of all facilities. Students and staff were evacuated as a precautionary measure, and access to the university was temporarily restricted.
Wayanad District Police Chief, R. Anand, stated that the email is under forensic examination to trace its origin. He emphasized that while no suspicious objects had been found during the initial sweep, security measures would remain heightened until the investigation concludes.
This incident has raised concerns due to its reference to Afzal Guru, who was executed in 2013 for his role in the 2001 attack on the Indian Parliament. The case has been a sensitive topic, with various groups expressing differing views on the fairness of his trial and subsequent execution.
The university community expressed shock and apprehension over the threat. Dr. Anil K.S. addressed the media, urging students and staff to remain calm and cooperate with authorities. He assured that the university is taking all necessary steps to ensure everyone's safety and that counseling services would be available for those feeling distressed.
This is not the first time KVASU has faced security threats. In 2018, a group of masked individuals, suspected to be Maoists, placed a fake bomb at the university's entrance and threatened to blow up the institution. The device was later found to contain only electric wires, but the incident highlighted vulnerabilities in campus security.
The current threat has prompted discussions about the need for enhanced security protocols at educational institutions, especially those in relatively remote areas like Pookode. Local authorities have indicated that they will review and strengthen security measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
In the meantime, KVASU has suspended all classes and activities until further notice. Students residing in hostels have been advised to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities to authorities.
