Kerala brewery scandal gets linked to Delhi liquor scam

Allegations of large-scale corruption have pushed the Kerala brewery scandal to the forefront of national politics, drawing a sharp focus on government actions regarding a controversial brewery license. The dispute centers around the approval of a brewery license to Oasis Commercial Private Ltd, a company now embroiled in accusations tied to the Delhi liquor scam. Opposition parties, including the United Democratic Front, have strongly criticized the swift granting of the license, emphasizing that it could be a politically motivated decision designed to favor certain corporate interests.

The company’s application for the license has not only sparked a political firestorm in Kerala but also attracted national attention due to its association with figures implicated in the Delhi liquor scandal. According to sources, K Kavitha, a prominent political figure and accused in the Delhi liquor case, allegedly visited Kerala to lobby for Oasis Commercial. Kavitha, a member of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi , reportedly met with the Left Democratic Front government to secure approval for the brewery project, adding a layer of complexity to the ongoing controversy.
Critics of the brewery project argue that the approval process was rushed and lacked proper scrutiny. The site selected for the brewery lies in a region plagued by persistent water shortages. Environmental concerns have been raised, particularly regarding the potential impact of large-scale water consumption by the brewery in an area that already struggles to meet the needs of its residents. The opposition has further highlighted the irony of the situation, pointing to the fact that a Coca-Cola bottling plant in the same region was forced to close following a popular protest led by the constituents of the current ruling front. The local opposition to such industrial projects appears to have been overlooked in the case of Oasis Commercial.
The controversy surrounding the brewery license has become a major talking point in Kerala’s political landscape, with both the UDF and the Bharatiya Janata Party accusing the government of misusing its powers. The BJP has focused its criticism on the alleged ties between Kavitha and the LDF, calling it a textbook example of political corruption. The UDF, which governs in coalition with several smaller parties, has similarly questioned the transparency of the licensing process and has accused the LDF of granting favors to a company that could be linked to key figures in the Delhi liquor scam.
The opposition's concerns are further fuelled by the background of the company at the center of the controversy. Oasis Commercial Private Ltd, despite its relatively obscure standing in Kerala’s business community, has now found itself at the heart of this political debate. Allegations have surfaced that the brewery project’s approval was expedited in exchange for political favors, with some claiming that the company's owners have close ties to influential political leaders, both in Kerala and at the national level.
The situation has evolved beyond a state issue, attracting national scrutiny due to its connection with the Delhi liquor scandal. The Delhi liquor scam, which involved multiple high-profile figures from different political parties, has already led to significant investigations and arrests. Kavitha’s alleged involvement in both scandals has prompted further questions about the extent of corruption in the political landscape and the role of businesses in influencing government decisions. The BJP, in particular, has been quick to draw comparisons between the two cases, accusing the LDF of granting the brewery license as part of a larger pattern of quid pro quo deals.
