A family holiday in Kashmir turned into a pivotal moment in a terror investigation when a tourist's casual video inadvertently captured two suspected militants. The footage, recorded on 18 April at Betaab Valley near Pahalgam, has become a crucial piece of evidence for the National Investigation Agency as it probes a recent terror attack in the region.
The tourist, hailing from Kerala, was filming his daughter against the scenic backdrop of Betaab Valley, a popular destination approximately 7.5 kilometres from Pahalgam. Two individuals, now believed to be terrorists, walked past in the background of the video. It was only after authorities released sketches of the suspects that the tourist recognised the men in his footage.
The presence of the terrorists in Betaab Valley has led to suspicions that they may have planned coordinated attacks at multiple locations in Kashmir. The security agencies now believe that, alongside Pahalgam, other tourist spots might also have been selected as potential targets.
Upon this realisation, he promptly contacted the NIA and submitted the video. The agency has since collected additional details from him and has requested his availability for further inquiries as needed. The tourist recounted the incident, expressing shock at the proximity of the terrorists to his family, stating, "It was shocking and frightening to see two terrorists pass by our young daughter. By god’s grace, we escaped."
The NIA's investigation into the attack has intensified, with the video providing a tangible lead. Authorities are analysing the footage to identify the suspects and trace their movements. The incident underscores the unpredictable nature of terror threats in the region and the importance of public vigilance.

On the day of the attack, around 1,000 tickets were reportedly sold at Pahalgam, suggesting a large tourist turnout. However, there was reportedly inadequate security in the area. Sources indicate that the reopening of Betaab Valley for tourism was done without proper clearance from security agencies.
