Satheesan rejects invitation to Vizhinjam event

Opposition Leader VD Satheesan confirmed on Wednesday that he will not attend the upcoming commissioning of the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Thiruvananthapuram, despite receiving an invitation from the Kerala state government. The event, which is scheduled for May 2, has become a point of contention due to the circumstances surrounding his invitation.
Satheesan's decision comes after a public dispute over his exclusion from the event, which stirred controversy in the state. He revealed that the official invitation letter, which arrived only on Tuesday, lacked key details. According to Satheesan, the letter failed to specify the nature of his participation in the event or clarify whether his attendance would be as a mere invitee or as a participant. This, he argued, left him with no clarity regarding his role in the ceremony, prompting him to dismiss the letter as insufficiently formal.
The Leader of the Opposition also expressed his dissatisfaction with the timing of the invitation. Satheesan suggested that the invitation was extended only after public uproar over his initial omission from the event. “I did not receive any prior communication, and it was only after the controversy surrounding my exclusion that they decided to invite me,” he remarked. He further emphasized that this belated communication did not hold the weight of an official invitation in his view.
Satheesan’s stance is not limited to the invitation issue alone. He accused Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan of attempting to monopolise the credit for the successful completion of the Vizhinjam port project. The Opposition Leader made it clear that the credit for the port should be attributed to the leadership of the previous government under Oommen Chandy, highlighting the Chandy administration's commitment and efforts in bringing the ambitious project to fruition. Satheesan suggested that the current government was taking undue advantage of the project’s completion to project itself as the principal driver of its success, an argument that has resonated with various political observers.
The Vizhinjam International Seaport, a multi-billion-dollar infrastructure project, has been a significant point of contention in Kerala's political landscape. The project aims to position the state as a maritime hub, with potential to boost international trade, and has been in development for over a decade. However, its completion has been fraught with delays, controversies, and shifting political narratives.
Despite the project's completion, the political debate surrounding it is far from over. The Opposition has long maintained that while the port is an important achievement, it is also the result of continuous work by multiple governments, particularly the one led by Oommen Chandy. The ruling Left Democratic Front, on the other hand, has presented the port’s opening as a major triumph of their administration, further fueling the political friction.
