Vizhinjam Port ceremony runup marred by sparring

The commissioning of the Vizhinjam International Seaport, scheduled for May 2, has become a focal point of political contention in Kerala. The exclusion of Leader of the Opposition V D Satheesan from the initial list of invitees has drawn sharp criticism from the United Democratic Front, questioning the nature of the event, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will perform the duty of dedicating the project to the nation.
The ruling Left Democratic Front government, led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, initially justified Satheesan's omission by stating that the event was part of the fourth-anniversary celebrations of the current administration, thereby framing it as a party function rather than a state event. This rationale was, however, challenged by the opposition, which argued that the presence of the Prime Minister at a purportedly partisan event blurred the lines between governmental and party activities.
In response to mounting pressure and public scrutiny, the government extended a belated invitation to Satheesan. However, the invitation lacked clarity regarding his role or participation in the ceremony, leading to further dissatisfaction within the UDF. The ambiguity surrounding the invitation has been perceived by some as a token gesture rather than a genuine effort to include the opposition in a significant state occasion.
Compounding the controversy, a review meeting related to the port's commissioning was attended by members of Chief Minister Vijayan's family, including his wife, daughter T Veena, and grandson. Photographs from the meeting, which were shared on social media, showed T Veena and her son participating alongside officials from Vizhinjam International Seaport Ltd. The presence of the Chief Minister's family in what was described as a high-level official meeting raised questions about the appropriateness of their involvement in state affairs.
Former Vigilance Director Jacob Thomas publicly questioned the family's attendance, highlighting concerns about the blurring of personal and official boundaries. In defence, VISL Managing Director Divya S Iyer stated that the meeting was informal and that there was nothing unusual about the Chief Minister being accompanied by his family. Despite these assurances, the incident has fuelled debates about transparency and propriety in governmental proceedings.
The LDF and the UDF have been engaged in a running battle to claim credit for the Vizhinjam port project, which was initiated during the tenure of veteran Congress leader Oommen Chandy as chief minister. The CPM, then in the opposition, had opposed the project, alleging corruption and kickbacks.
But the project was commissioned under Pinarayi Vijayan's government, which is now claiming full credit for making the project a reality.
Congress leaders are demanding that the port be named after Oommen Chandy in recognition of his role in initiating the project, which the government is in no mood to agree.
