"Kamal Haasan's Linguistic Remark Sparks Regional Tensions"

Kamal Haasan's assertion that Kannada originated from Tamil has ignited a significant controversy, leading to political backlash and threats of film bans in Karnataka. The veteran actor's comments during a promotional event for his upcoming film 'Thug Life' have been met with strong reactions from various quarters.

During the event in Chennai, Haasan stated that "Kannada was born out of Tamil," a remark that was perceived by many in Karnataka as undermining the distinct identity of the Kannada language. The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce responded by threatening to block the release of 'Thug Life' in the state unless Haasan issued a public apology. Karnataka's Minister for Kannada and Culture, Shivaraj Tangadagi, echoed this sentiment, warning that all of Haasan's films could face bans in the state if he did not retract his statement.

Haasan, however, remained defiant, stating that he would only apologise if he believed he was wrong. He emphasized his respect for all South Indian languages and cultures, asserting that his comments were made out of love and based on historical linguistic studies. "If I'm wrong, I'll apologise. If I'm not, I won't. This is my lifestyle, please don't tamper with it," Haasan remarked.

The controversy has also drawn reactions from other prominent figures. Kannada actor Shiva Rajkumar, who was present at the event, defended Haasan, noting that he has always spoken highly of the Kannada language and culture. Conversely, actress Divya Spandana suggested that Haasan should apologise to ease tensions, a stance that led to criticism from pro-Kannada groups who felt her comments were unnecessary.

The South Indian Artistes' Association issued a statement supporting Haasan, highlighting his history of promoting unity among South Indian cultures and recalling his solidarity with the Kannada community during past crises. They urged the public to interpret Haasan's remarks within their intended context and refrain from reacting hastily.
