Storm over Kerala alumni event in Dubai with Afridi appearance

A cultural event hosted by the Cochin University B.Tech Alumni Association(CUBAA)  in Dubai has ignited a diplomatic controversy after Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi made an unexpected appearance, drawing sharp criticism from Indian political circles and the public.
The event, held on 25 May at the Pakistan Association Dubai auditorium, was part of the 'Ormachuvadukal Season 2' inter-collegiate dance competition. Videos circulating on social media show Afridi being welcomed on stage with enthusiastic cheers and chants of "Boom Boom," a nickname associated with his cricketing career. Afridi responded with "Hogaya Boom Boom," further engaging with the audience.
The timing of Afridi's appearance has intensified the backlash, coming shortly after his controversial remarks blaming Indian security forces for the Pahalgam terror attack on 22 April, which resulted in 26 fatalities. In a televised interview, Afridi suggested that India often blames Pakistan for internal incidents, stating, "Even if a firecracker were to burst in India, fingers will always be pointed at Pakistan."
The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad has filed a formal complaint with the Prime Minister's Office and the Ministry of External Affairs, demanding the cancellation of passports of the event's organisers. The ABVP alleges that hosting Afridi, known for his anti-India rhetoric, is a betrayal of national interests.
In response to the uproar, CUBAA issued a statement expressing "deep regret" over the incident. The association clarified that Afridi and fellow Pakistani cricketer Umar Gul were not invited to the event. According to CUBAA, the cricketers were present at the PAD venue for a separate event related to a Guinness World Record attempt for the largest UAE flag with handprints. Their appearance at the alumni event was unplanned and coincidental.
CUBAA further explained that the PAD auditorium had been booked on 5 April, prior to the escalation of tensions between India and Pakistan. The venue was chosen for its affordability and had been used for previous events. The association emphasised that managing the crowd's reaction was challenging due to the surprise nature of Afridi's entry.
Despite the clarification, social media platforms have been flooded with criticism. Many users expressed disappointment over the warm reception given to Afridi, especially in light of his recent comments. Some posts questioned the patriotism of the organisers, while others called for stricter scrutiny of such events involving foreign nationals with controversial backgrounds.
The incident has also sparked discussions about the responsibilities of diaspora communities in hosting events that may have political implications. While cultural exchanges are encouraged, the unintended consequences of unvetted appearances by polarising figures have become a point of contention. Open URL
