Vindicated after 25-year legal ordeal

A former assistant director in Kerala’s agriculture department has been acquitted of corruption charges after a protracted 25-year legal battle that overshadowed her 34-year career in public service.
L. Laila, now 69, was cleared by the Special Vigilance Court in Muvattupuzha on 25 May 2025. The court found no evidence to support allegations that she had misappropriated ₹3.47 lakh through forgery during her tenure from 1993 to 1996. The charges, which led to her suspension and demotion, stemmed from a misinterpretation of her administrative actions aimed at ensuring timely disbursement of funds to local agricultural offices.
According to court records, Laila had transferred funds to her office account to expedite payments to subordinate offices, a move necessitated by treasury restrictions at the time. These actions were later misconstrued as misappropriation, leading to a vigilance case that lingered for over two decades.
The prolonged litigation not only stalled her professional advancement but also subjected her to significant personal distress. Laila expressed relief at the verdict but lamented the years of mental anguish and reputational damage endured.
