MDMK Voices Discontent Over Rajya Sabha Seat Allocation

Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam principal secretary and Tiruchirappalli MP Durai Vaiko has publicly expressed disappointment over the exclusion of party general secretary Vaiko from the upcoming Rajya Sabha nominations. Despite the setback, Durai Vaiko affirmed that the party remains committed to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam -led alliance, prioritising the broader interests of Tamil Nadu.

Addressing the media in Tiruchirappalli, Durai Vaiko highlighted the sentiments of party cadres and supporters who were disheartened by the decision. He noted that while there was no formal agreement with the DMK regarding the Rajya Sabha seat, the expectation was based on mutual understanding and past assurances. "Our leader, Vaiko, has been a stalwart in Tamil Nadu politics, with over six decades of public service. His contributions to the state's welfare and his unwavering commitment to Tamil causes are well-recognised," Durai Vaiko stated.

Durai Vaiko recounted that when MDMK joined the DMK-led alliance in 2019, there was an understanding that the party would be allocated one Lok Sabha and one Rajya Sabha seat. While the Lok Sabha seat was honoured, the Rajya Sabha seat remained pending. "We waited with hope, believing that the DMK would fulfil its commitment. The denial has caused pain among our ranks," he remarked.

Despite the disappointment, Durai Vaiko emphasised the party's decision to move forward for the greater good. "The alliance's unity is paramount. We will continue our collaboration with the DMK, focusing on the welfare of Tamil Nadu," he affirmed.

Reflecting on Vaiko's illustrious political career, Durai Vaiko highlighted his father's tenure in both Houses of Parliament, his advocacy for Tamil rights, and his resistance to Hindi imposition. "Vaiko has always prioritised people's service over positions. He declined Union cabinet roles multiple times, underscoring his commitment to principles," he added.

The MDMK has scheduled a general council meeting on June 22 to deliberate on the party's strategy for the upcoming Assembly elections and other pertinent issues. Durai Vaiko indicated that decisions regarding Vaiko's participation in the elections would be made during this meeting.

The DMK's recent allocation of a Rajya Sabha seat to actor-politician Kamal Haasan's Makkal Needhi Maiam has been viewed by some as a strategic move to diversify its alliance. While this decision has raised eyebrows within the MDMK, the party remains steadfast in its alliance commitment.

Political analysts suggest that the DMK's choices reflect a broader strategy to consolidate support across various demographics. However, the exclusion of long-standing allies like Vaiko may have implications for internal alliance dynamics.
