Monsoon fury triggers emergency measures

Heavy monsoon rains have unleashed widespread disruption across Kerala, prompting the India Meteorological Department to issue red alerts for eight districts and orange alerts for six others. The deluge has led to flash floods, landslides, and extensive damage to infrastructure, compelling authorities to implement emergency measures to safeguard residents.
Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kannur, and Kasaragod are under red alert, indicating the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 204.4 mm in 24 hours. Orange alerts have been declared in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad, warning of very heavy rainfall between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm.
The IMD attributes the intense precipitation to an upper air cyclonic circulation over west Rajasthan and northern central Uttar Pradesh, coupled with strong westerly winds in the lower troposphere over Kerala and the Lakshadweep region. These conditions are expected to persist, with forecasts indicating continued heavy to very heavy rainfall and strong winds over the next two days.
In Idukki district, landslides have been reported, leading to road blockages and isolating several communities. Authorities have imposed restrictions on night travel in high-altitude areas and closed all tourist spots to prevent further casualties. Similar precautionary measures have been adopted in other districts facing severe weather conditions.
Urban centers like Kochi have experienced significant waterlogging due to the heavy rains, exacerbated by inadequate drainage systems. Key areas such as Jos Junction, Woodlands Junction, and TD Road have seen traffic disruptions. The accumulation of stormwater has been linked to the late desilting of canals, with silt from waterways like Karanakkodam being improperly managed and washed back during the rains.
Currently, 1,329 individuals from 395 families have been relocated to 51 relief camps across the state. Residents in vulnerable zones, particularly those near riverbanks and low-lying areas, have been advised to move to safer locations. The government has also urged citizens to report damaged power lines and take precautions during early morning activities.
