Surge in Applications Overwhelms Tamil Nadu Government Colleges

Presidency College in Chennai has emerged as the most sought-after government arts and science institution in Tamil Nadu this year, receiving 40,167 applications for just 2,380 seats. This surge underscores a broader trend across the state, where demand for government college seats has significantly outpaced supply.
According to data from the Directorate of Collegiate Education, 179 government arts and science colleges across Tamil Nadu have collectively received 1,87,310 applications for 1,26,465 available seats. This represents a substantial increase in applications compared to previous years, indicating heightened competition among aspirants.
Among the top five most preferred government colleges this year are Presidency College, Government Arts College in Nandanam, and Dr. Ambedkar Government Arts College in Vyasarpadi. Nandanam and Ambedkar colleges received 29,376 and 29,275 applications respectively, highlighting their popularity among students. Queen Mary’s College also reported a high number of applications, with 23,018 candidates vying for 2,038 seats.
The surge in applications is partly attributed to the introduction of new courses and increased intake capacities. Presidency College, for instance, added over 600 seats in undergraduate courses for the 2025-26 academic year, marking an approximate increase of 30% to 50% in several subjects. The college also introduced a second shift and launched a BSc Computer Science course to accommodate the growing interest in technology-related fields.
BSc Computer Science has emerged as the most preferred course among applicants, followed by BA Tamil, BCom, BA English, BBA, BSc Chemistry, and BA Economics. The popularity of computer science courses reflects the increasing demand for technology-oriented education and the perceived employment opportunities in the IT sector.
In response to the growing demand for higher education, the Tamil Nadu government has initiated the establishment of new colleges. A new government arts and science college was inaugurated in Coonoor, offering programs in BBA, BCom, and BSc in Botany, Zoology, and Computer Science. The college, temporarily operating within the Arignar Anna Higher Secondary School campus, has already received over 750 applications for 270 seats. Similarly, a new college in Thuraiyur, rural Trichy, has been welcomed by local residents and academicians. The college will offer 275 seats across five undergraduate programs, including BA in History and Political Science, BBA, BCom, and BSc in Computer Science.
However, the rapid expansion of colleges has raised concerns about faculty shortages and the availability of modern courses. Academicians have pointed out the lack of language majors and potential staffing issues due to faculty being reassigned from already understaffed institutions. The Tamil Nadu Government College Teachers' Association has expressed optimism about the government's promise to expedite the recruitment of 4,000 teachers to address these challenges.
The Tamil Nadu Government Arts and Science Colleges Admissions portal continues to accept applications, with final numbers expected to surpass last year's count of over two lakh applications. Counseling sessions for special category students are scheduled to start on June 2, while classes for the new academic year are set to begin on June 16 for continuing students and June 30 for first-year students.
