Thalugai Hamlet Demands Dignified Final Rites

TIRUCHI, Tamil Nadu — Residents of T. Mangapatti Puthur, a Scheduled Caste hamlet in Thalugai panchayat, are urging authorities to formally recognise and provide infrastructure for a burial ground temporarily allotted to them last year. The community has long conducted last rites along the banks of the Thalugai water channel, a practice they say undermines their dignity and often leads to disputes.

The hamlet, home to over 150 families, lacks a designated space for cremation or burial. In 2023, local officials temporarily allocated a plot of land for this purpose, but residents report that no formal recognition or development has followed. Without basic facilities like a cremation platform, water supply, or a compound wall, the site remains unusable, forcing families to continue using the riverbank.

Community leaders have submitted multiple petitions to the panchayat and district administration, highlighting the emotional and social toll of the current situation. They argue that the lack of a proper facility not only disrespects the deceased but also exposes mourners to health hazards and social stigma.
