Vijayan Accuses Anvar of Betrayal as Nilambur Bypoll Heats Up

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has sharply criticised former Nilambur MLA P V Anvar, attributing the upcoming by-election to Anvar's "betrayal" of the Left Democratic Front . Speaking at the LDF convention in Nilambur, Vijayan stated that the Left was deceived, leading to the necessity of the bypoll. He expressed confidence in LDF candidate M Swaraj, highlighting his strong public support and clean image.
The by-election, scheduled for June 19, was triggered by Anvar's resignation in January after a fallout with the ruling Communist Party of India. Anvar, who had previously won the seat twice with LDF support, accused the government of ignoring alleged illegal dealings involving top police officials. He subsequently joined the Trinamool Congress and has declared his intention to contest the bypoll, criticising both the LDF and the United Democratic Front.
Anvar responded to the CM's charge by asserting that Pinarayi Vijayan has used the party apparatus to perpetrate dynastic rule. He also accused Vijayan of 'using and throwing' communities to further his family interests.

Anvar's candidacy has added complexity to the electoral landscape. Initially announcing his withdrawal due to lack of funds, he reversed his decision after receiving financial support from his followers. Anvar has accused Opposition leader V D Satheesan of blocking his entry into the UDF and criticised UDF candidate Aryadan Shoukath, asserting that Shoukath has alienated various sections of the Nilambur electorate.
The UDF, led by the Indian National Congress, has officially named Aryadan Shoukath, son of the late veteran leader Aryadan Mohammed, as its candidate. Despite internal disagreements, the party proceeded with Shoukath's nomination, emphasizing his developmental agenda and commitment to unity. Shoukath has pledged to address local developmental stagnation and criticised the LDF government's neglect of tribal communities.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has also entered the fray, nominating Mohan George as its candidate for the Nilambur by-election. While the main contest is expected to be between the UDF and LDF candidates, the BJP's participation adds another dimension to the electoral battle.
