Indian Union Muslim League leader K M Shaji has introduced 'Operation Sindoor' into the campaign discourse, challenging Left Democratic Front candidate M Swaraj's prior anti-war stance.
Addressing reporters in Nilambur, Shaji questioned whether Swaraj maintains his earlier position on the futility of war, referencing a Facebook post that had previously drawn significant attention. He highlighted the emotional impact of the Pahalgam incident, where terrorists compelled victims to recite the 'kalima' before executing them, describing it as a profound affront to Muslim dignity.
Shaji emphasized the IUML's efforts to garner international support, with leaders like E T Muhammad Basheer engaging globally to assert that Pakistan instigated the conflict. He pressed Swaraj to clarify if his anti-war views have evolved since becoming a candidate.
In response, Swaraj reaffirmed his commitment to peace, stating that his earlier comments pertained to the situation in Palestine and that his stance remains unchanged. He accused the IUML of politicizing national security issues for electoral gain.
The LDF's selection of Swaraj marks a strategic shift, as he is the first CPM leader to contest in Nilambur in 58 years, signaling the party's intent to solidify its presence in the constituency. Swaraj's candidacy has been met with enthusiasm from party workers, who welcomed him with slogans and rallies.
