IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Kerala Districts Amidst Unseasonal Weather Patterns

The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Pathanamthitta districts on February 28 and March 1, anticipating isolated heavy rainfall in these areas. This advisory comes as Kerala experiences unusual weather fluctuations, including an unprecedented heatwave warning for Kannur and Kasaragod districts.

According to the IMD's daily weather report, heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places in Kerala on February 28 and March 1. The forecast indicates that these districts may receive rainfall ranging between 7 to 11 centimeters within a 24-hour period. Residents are advised to remain vigilant due to potential impacts such as reduced visibility, waterlogging, and traffic disruptions.

In a rare occurrence, the IMD has also issued a heatwave warning for Kannur and Kasaragod districts, predicting temperatures to soar above 39 degrees Celsius. On February 24, Kannur airport recorded a maximum temperature of 40.4 degrees Celsius, marking the highest February temperature in Kerala's history. This deviation from typical weather patterns has raised concerns among meteorologists and the public alike.

M G Manoj, a scientist at the Cochin University of Science and Technology's Radar Research Centre, noted that such a heatwave alert in February is unusual. He attributed the rise in temperatures to the absence of rainfall, leading to dry weather conditions. The IMD's seasonal forecast, expected by the end of this week, will provide further insights into the state's summer weather expectations.

The IMD's press release outlines the anticipated weather conditions, highlighting the likelihood of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning over Kerala and Mahe from February 27 to March 2. The department has also predicted fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall during this period. Residents are urged to take necessary precautions, including staying indoors during thunderstorms, avoiding shelter under trees, and unplugging electrical appliances to prevent lightning-related incidents.
