ASHA workers plan symbolic hair-cut

Accredited Social Health Activists in the state have announced plans to escalate their ongoing protest by cutting their hair on March 31, marking the 50th day of their agitation for better wages and working conditions. The demonstration underscores their frustration with the government's perceived indifference to their demands.
The protest highlights inadequate compensation for ASHA workers, who are integral to India's public health system. Despite their pivotal role, they are often classified as 'volunteers,' which denies them the benefits and job security afforded to regular government employees. This classification has been a longstanding point of contention, leading to calls for recognition and fair remuneration.
During a visit to Wayanad, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra met with striking ASHA workers and advocated for regular wages and the settlement of unpaid dues. She emphasized the relevance of their grievances, noting that many have worked without pay for extended periods.
The opposition United Democratic Front has also criticized the state government's handling of the protest, accusing it of neglecting the legitimate demands of ASHA workers. UDF leaders have called for immediate action to resolve the crisis and prevent further escalation.
International attention has been drawn to the situation as well.
