BJP National Council Member C. Raghunath has called for the withdrawal of actor Mohanlal's honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army, citing concerns over the actor's involvement in the film 'Empuraan'.
Raghunath announced his intention to approach the court to ensure that Mohanlal relinquishes this military honour. He alleges that the movie portrays the central government in a negative light and questions whether it received foreign funding. Additionally, Raghunath criticised the Central Board of Film Certification for approving the film without objections.
'Empuraan', the sequel to the 2019 film 'Lucifer', references events reminiscent of the 2002 Gujarat riots and delves into the alleged misuse of central investigative agencies. While the ruling Left Front and the opposition Congress party have praised the film for exposing what they term the "Sangh agenda," right-wing groups have labeled it as "anti-Hindu" and "propaganda." The movie premiered on March 27 and reportedly grossed ₹22 crore on its opening day, setting a new record for Malayalam cinema in the state.
Mohanlal, a celebrated figure in Indian cinema, was conferred the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army in 2009, becoming the first actor in India to receive this distinction. This honor was bestowed in recognition of his contributions to Indian cinema and his role in promoting the armed forces. The current controversy has led to debates about the appropriateness of retaining such honorary titles when the individual is involved in projects perceived as critical of the government.
