Minority Welfare Minister V Abdurahiman has condemned the communal remarks directed at actor Mohanlal following his offering at the Sabarimala Lord Ayyappa temple on behalf of fellow actor Mammootty.
Abdurahiman labeled such comments as narrow-minded and uncivilized, demanding public apologies from those responsible. He emphasized that individuals making these statements, without understanding Kerala's secular ethos, are a disgrace to the state.
The controversy began after Mohanlal's visit to the Sabarimala temple on March 18, where he performed a ritual seeking blessings for Mammootty's well-being. A receipt from this offering, which included Mammootty's birth name, Muhammed Kutty, and his birth star, Vishakham, was leaked online, igniting debates over the appropriateness of a Hindu ritual conducted for a Muslim individual. Some critics questioned whether Mammootty had requested the ritual, suggesting that such an act might contradict Islamic principles.
In response, Abdurahiman urged religious scholars to reject these divisive narratives, asserting that such statements aim to malign specific religions and disrupt communal harmony in Kerala. He warned that these controversies could further polarize society and called for vigilance against those misinterpreting religious teachings to spread intolerance. Citing previous incidents, he highlighted attempts to prevent students from attending study tours and criticized the condemnation of a Muslim woman for traveling with her children, labeling such regressive attitudes as detrimental to societal progress.
Mohanlal addressed the situation, clarifying that he had included Mammootty's name and birth star in the temple offering, along with those of his own family members. He expressed surprise that this personal gesture became public and emphasized the private nature of prayers. Mohanlal also mentioned that he and Mammootty share a longstanding friendship, having collaborated on over 50 films, and regularly communicate, underscoring the depth of their relationship.
The Travancore Devaswom Board, which manages the Sabarimala temple, responded to the leak of the offering receipt. They clarified that the leaked document was from the devotee's copy and stated there was no lapse on their part, aiming to address misunderstandings and maintain the sanctity of temple practices.
