In a heartfelt statement shared on social media, Mohanlal expressed regret over the distress caused to his audience. He acknowledged that certain political and social elements in *Empuraan* had deeply upset many fans and well-wishers. Emphasizing his responsibility as an artist, Mohanlal stated that none of his films should foster animosity towards any political movement, ideology, or religious group. Consequently, he and the *Empuraan* team have collectively decided to remove the contentious scenes from the film.
The controversy centers around the film's depiction of events reminiscent of the 2002 Gujarat riots. Critics, including right-wing political groups like the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh , have accused the film of presenting a one-sided narrative and promoting an anti-Hindu political agenda. The portrayal of characters and events has been particularly contentious, leading to calls for boycotts and public outcry.
In response to the backlash, the filmmakers have voluntarily approached the Central Board of Film Certification to implement over 17 cuts in the movie. These edits include modifications to riot sequences and scenes depicting violence against women. The revised version of the film is slated for re-release in the coming week.
Political figures have also weighed in on the controversy. BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar announced that he would not watch *L2: Empuraan*, asserting that any film distorting truth to craft its narrative is destined to fail. He expressed disappointment with this style of filmmaking.
Amid the escalating situation, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan condemned the 'hate campaign' launched by the Sangh Parivar against the cast and crew of *Empuraan*. He expressed concern over the atmosphere of fear being created by right-wing groups and emphasized the importance of artistic freedom.
