In response to the uproar over Empuraan, Major Ravi, a director and close associate of Mohanlal, defended the actor, stating that Mohanlal had not viewed the film prior to its release. During a Facebook Live session, Major Ravi remarked, "The Mohanlal I know will apologise to all of you—I am certain of that."
The film portrays a Muslim-majority village being attacked by a Hindu mob, with scenes depicting brutal violence, including the rape of a pregnant Muslim woman by a Hindu man. These scenes have been interpreted as references to the Bilkis Bano case, intensifying the controversy.Scriptwriter Murali Gopy addressed the controversy by emphasizing the subjective nature of film interpretation. He stated, "I will keep total silence on the controversy. Let them fight it out. Everyone has the right to interpret the film in their own way."
The political implications of 'Empuraan' have also led to divisions within political parties. The Kerala unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party initially extended best wishes to the film's team but later retracted support amid the backlash. BJP Kerala unit president Rajeev Chandrasekhar expressed disappointment, stating, "I understand there were topics in the movie that disturbed Mohanlal fans and other viewers... So, will I watch this sequel to Lucifer? No. Am I disappointed by this type of moviemaking? Yes."
Conversely, the Congress party in Kerala praised 'Empuraan' for exposing what they described as the "Sangh agenda." The film's portrayal of the Gujarat riots and critique of right-wing politics resonated with Congress supporters, who viewed it as a bold exposition of divisive tactics.
