Cuts, Lal apology fail to contain Empuraan controversy

---

In his apology posted on Facebook, superstar Mohanlal expressed regret for any distress caused by the film's content and emphasized his responsibility as an artist to ensure that his work does not promote hatred towards any political movement, ideology, or religious group.
The production team has collectively decided to remove contentious elements from the movie to address the concerns raised, he added.
It was stated on behalf of the superstar that he had not read the script of the film and as such was not aware of the full content of the film. Major Ravi, who has been a Lal associate and friend, had stated earlier in the day that the actor was never in the habit of interfering with the script of a movie and that he could not have been aware of the actual content. In fact, Major Ravi had predicted that Mohanlal would apologise for his perceived lapses.
But the Organiser, the mouthpiece of RSS, which launched the first strike against the sequel to Mohanlal starrer Lucifer, refused to be satisfied with Mohanlal's explanation.
Despite the apology, Organiser continued its scathing attack
on the actor, saying it is unbelievable that Mohanlal was not aware of the
story in advance. "Do you think it is a coincidence that the name of the
character played in Empuraan is Saeed Masood and it is a combined version of
the names of Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist Masood Azhar and Lashkar-e-Taiba
terrorist Hafiz Saeed," the Organiser article argued.
The film's antagonist, named Baba Bajrangi, has also drawn criticism. Some viewers interpret this as a reference to Babu Bajrangi, a figure associated with the 2002 Gujarat riots. Critics argue that such naming choices unfairly associate Hindu leaders with negative portrayals, furthering the alleged bias.
Organiser contends that 'L2: Empuraan' portrays the Hindu community negatively, particularly in its depiction of the 2002 Gujarat riots. The publication asserts that the film presents a biased view, vilifying Hindus as the sole aggressors during the riots, while neglecting to address the events that led up to them. It highlights a specific scene where Hindu men are shown committing brutal acts against Muslims, arguing that this misrepresentation fosters communal discord.
According to Organiser, Empuraan is not merely entertainment but serves as a medium to advance a divisive political agenda. The publication asserts that the film distorts historical events, portraying Hindus as the sole aggressors during the riots. A particularly contentious scene depicts Hindu men committing acts of violence against Muslims, which Organiser argues misrepresents history and fosters communal discord.
