Police chief vows action against cyber attacks

Kerala's Director General of Police has pledged decisive action against individuals involved in the cyber harassment of actor Mohanlal and others associated with the film 'Empuraan'. This commitment follows a formal complaint lodged by Supreme Court lawyer Subhash Theekkadan, highlighting the escalating online vitriol directed at the film's cast and crew.
'Empuraan', directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran and starring Mohanlal, has become a focal point of controversy since its release. The film's portrayal of events reminiscent of the 2002 Gujarat riots has ignited polarized reactions. Critics from certain political and religious groups allege that the movie misrepresents historical incidents and promotes an anti-Hindu narrative. Conversely, supporters argue that it courageously exposes divisive agendas and underscores the importance of artistic freedom.
The controversy has spilled over into the digital realm, with social media platforms witnessing a surge in abusive comments, threats, and coordinated attacks targeting the film's team. The situation intensified to the extent that Subhash Theekkadan deemed it necessary to approach the state's top law enforcement official, urging intervention to curb the online harassment.
In response to the complaint, the DGP assured that the cyber cell would investigate the matter thoroughly. Emphasizing the seriousness of cyberbullying and online threats, the DGP stated that such behaviour would not be tolerated and that perpetrators would face legal consequences. This stance reflects the Kerala Police's commitment to safeguarding individuals from digital harassment and upholding the rule of law in virtual spaces.
The Kerala Film Producers' Association has also taken proactive measures to combat the challenges faced by 'Empuraan'. Following reports of the film's pirated versions circulating online, the association appointed ethical hackers to monitor and identify sources of piracy. Association president B. Rakesh highlighted the increasing threat of illegal distribution, particularly for high-profile releases, and called for governmental intervention to establish specialized teams to address such violations.
